The Digimon - Il Film

With the middle of the 2010s, things were looking quite good for Digimon for the first time in years. The Digimon tri. films were being released and doing well in Japan, but more importantly, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth was released on the Vita in 2015 in Japan to massive critical acclaim for its original graphics and return to the original Digimon World gameplay style.

Thanks a lot for putting this together. I saw the movie last night, and I was amazed at how similar the two films were, going so far as even to replicate camera shots. And obviously enough that I noticed my first watch.

But I hadnt realized just how many similarities there were until I read you post! I really enjoyed both films, but in my mind each one serves a different audience. I really liked the emphasis on family in Summer Wars, and that made it unique enough for me.

Have you seen SUPERFLAT MONOGRAM? It is a promotional short film that Hosoda directed for Louis Vuitton/Takashi Murakami. While it is much less serious and more whimsical in nature, it shares a lot of conceptual and visual similarities with the two films. (I believe it was released after Digimon, but before Summer Wars)

This September, the 20th anniversary feature film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna will be available in North America for the first time ever as both a digital and home video release thanks to Toei Animation and Shout! Factory.

On September 29, the film will debut first as a digital download available in original Japanese with English subtitles or English dub on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft and Sony PlayStation Network; followed a week later on October 6 with the retail home video release on DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD from Shout! Factory).

Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna takes place five years after the events of Digimon Adventure tri., the six-part film series released in 2015. As the official plot synopsis reveals: "Now on the cusp of adulthood, Tai and his DigiDestined friends discover that with age their bonds with each of their Digimon will ultimately break."

It was accompanied by a pair of Short Films. Hurricane Touchdown, also known as Transcendent Evolution! The Golden Digimentals, note The two different titles are actually the respective titles of each half of the movie, pre- and post-intermission is set before Ken joins the Digi Destined, and details their adventures in America and dealings with Wallace, a Digi Destined with twin Digimon; it was dubbed as the third part of Digimon: The Movie. The second film, Diablomon Strikes Back, is set within a year of the finale and is about the Digi Destined's response to the resurrection of Diablomon, the antagonist of Our War Game;note The central segment of Digimon: the Movie it aired in the US as a television special under the name Digimon: Revenge of Diaboromon. Because of the length of time between the end of production on Adventure 02 & the dubbing of Revenge of Diaboromon, it was the only portion of the Adventure era of the show that wasn't produced by Fox, the franchise having since changed hands to Disney, but still reunited the majority of the castnote Joshua Seth was replaced as Tai by Jason Spisak from the first two seasons of the show after 4 years.

Digimon: The Movie may have just been made to go up against the first two Pokémon films, but it did so much more than its Nintendo counterpart by making a film that was wholly unique and not just a straight-up adaptation like Pokémon: The First Movie Mewtwo Strikes Back.

What Saban does is they film American actors when the characters they are playing are not in costume and cut to Japanese footage whenever a battle between monsters is about to happen. They have done this for over 25 years, and they do so with a ton of changes to the plots and characters of the original show, adapting where they see fit.

The problem that Saban was facing was that Digimon lacked a proper feature-length film since, in Japan, three short films were instead released to coincide with the rising popularity of the Digimon Adventure series. Nonetheless, the heads of Saban instead chose to splice them all together into one movie with an overarching theme and narrative.
